Doofgoblin – Marblebarrel

This review is long overdue, for this fantastic release deserves a review only minutes after it’s release, but here it is, my opinion on Unschooled‘s second release.

Marblebarrel is a collection of mainly pretty short tracks (for the listener of most music styles) with only a few longer tracks. This works well, though at times you’d wish some tracks are a bit longer: just when you really get into it, it ends. Luckily though for those moments, the album has a very consistent sound, making it easy to get into the next track.

Unschooled has a very refreshing sound. A lot of unusual rhythms, a lot of noise (not harsh, but more subtle), strange melodic elements. Everything is there. And it’s all really slick.

I (and with me probably others) had already been introduced to doofgoblin by the track on the first release of Unschooled, the ENTER compilation, and his music on his ElectronicScene page. Yet, after listening to some seperate tracks, listening to an album with a consistent sound makes the music even better.

I guess this album contains two types of experimental music. The more accessible, and the less accessible. The more accessible tracks mostly contain rhythms (in one form or another) and a very solid sound. However, tracks such as End of January are more minimal, with very detailed textures that subtly change as the track plays. I am personally a fool for such beautiful textures, but one should definately not pull such a track out of the rest. It has it’s place.

Yes, Unschooled has done it again. Once again, a great album has been delivered. Freaky, awesome rhythms, wicked bleeps, beautiful textures. Everything is there. Just listen.
